Quay Wall Inspection Robot

Can the inspection of the quay walls which reinforce canals in the Netherlands be automated through robots?

Quay walls that reinforce canal walls in the Netherlands need regular inspection to ensure that canal banks are strong and safe for people and boats using canals. This repetitive and monotonous job can be undertaken using robots that are free of human error. Robots fitted with technical tools can monitor and inform government bodies when walls need maintenance and what kind of repair is needed to be done. Government bodies can then take appropriate actions to  undertake repairs.

Societal Impact

  1. It will lead to safer environments around the canals as robots will undertake routine and precise inspection.
  2. They will reinforce and support effective maintenance work by the authorities.
  3. Governments will be able to provide better services to citizens in terms of upkeep of canals.
  4. Life in cities will be more livable.
