Sewer Inspection

Can robots automate the task of inspection and maintenance of sewers?

Robots have the potential to automate the task of inspecting and contributing to maintaining sewers. Inspecting sewers can be a difficult task as they have a bad air quality, they are dirty and pose a high health risk to people involved in maintenance. As robots are immune to these conditions, they can be deployed to aid in this task of routinely inspecting sewers and detecting blockages. At a later stage, fully autonomous robots can undertake the task of cleaning the sewers as well.

Societal Impact

  1. Lead to improved maintenance standards to due precise reporting.
  2. Humans won’t be needed to do a task that poses a health risk to them.
  3. Will automate routine tasks for government authorities.
  4. Will reduce the cost of maintenance for the authorities.
